DESCRIPTION OF CLASSES

Hazmat Initial & Hazmat Refresher – the objective is for members to learn how to recognize hazardous and dangerous materials and situations, how to protect themselves and their coworkers from exposures and who to call if help is needed.  It also teaches them how to dispose of hazardous materials and how to handle the hazards of clean-up of hazardous waste sites or sites that may not be known as hazardous, but turn into hazardous waste sites.  The initial class is for new members or anyone who has never attended.  The refresher class reviews the initial class and brings new safety practices and information for those who previously attended the initial training to reinforced the need for safety on the job. Members need to be recertified every year.

OSHA Construction -  to provide general knowledge of OSHA Standards as they relate to construction projects by recognizing and avoiding potential risks and possibly being able to correct dangerous situations on the site.  This course will be attended by new members and those who have not yet attended. Members need to be re-certified every three years.

OSHA 30 hour – a more in-depth instruction on the topics taught in the OSHA Construction class with and emphasis on contractor responsibilities and employee rights and requirements.

Forklift Initial & Forklift Refresher – the Initial class is for new members and those who have not attended this class before.  This is for forklift operators to understand forklift safety standards and operating techniques and how to avoid and prevent accidents with respect to safely moving materials on a construction project. The Refresher class reviews the initial class and discusses any recent accidents and how they might have been prevented with those who attended the initial class three years earlier. Members need to be re-certified every three years.

MSHA Initial & MSHA Refresher – Mine Safety and Health Administration covering above ground mines and quarries, as well as underground mines.  An Operating Engineer may find themselves at some time in a quarry or mine and will need to learn the specific safety strategies of this type of workplace as covered by MSHA through group problem solving or other activities.  The Initial is for new members.  The MSHA Review class is a reinforcement of the safety information for permanent and the casual workers and is for those who have completed the initial safety course.

Asbestos Initial & Asbestos Refresher – for the Operating Engineer who may encounter asbestos on the many old buildings or facility demolition sites and the proper way of handling and disposing of the asbestos in order to protect their health and the health of their families by not bringing home contaminants. The class will focus on the use of PPE stressing skin and respiratory safety.  Again, the initial class is for new members and the refresher class updates and reinforces knowledge gained in the initial class. Group problem solving and other demonstrations related to asbestos abatement are part of this course. Members need to be re-certified every year.

Rigging Safety - this course is to provide crane operators and others working around the crane the safety skills needed for the use of wire rope and cables which include proper rigging which can prevent an accident and understanding the OSHA standards. Members need to take this course every five years.

Signaling Safety – course for crane operators and others working around the crane (oilers) teaching them hand signals and radio signals to prevent accidents while operating and working around a crane.  This class is for new members and current members as on many construction sites there are crane operators. Members need to take this course every five years.

Lead Awareness – lead is being found on a growing number of construction sites.  This course is extremely important in providing the members the knowledge of the dangers of lead and how to safely protect themselves and their families by not bringing home lead dust.  The class members will learn PPE and respiratory and skin protection.  This class is targeted for all members, new and current.  Members need to be re-certified every five years.

Confined Space Safety – this course teaches the Operating Engineer the dangers of working in a confined space and provides the knowledge needed to monitor  workers outside the confined space, as well as how to be safe in a confined area, wear personal protective equipment entering and exiting the space.

Disaster Site Worker – safety training is critical for the protection of the community as well as for the workers. The Operating Engineers are designed as skilled support staff for disaster site work.  This class provides instruction to members, new or current, who may be called to work at a disaster site.

Excavating & Trenching – designed for those new to digging trenches and excavation.  They are instructed to safely dig a trench and correctly place and remove a trench shield to protect those working in and around the trench.  Safe rescue procedures will be taught similar to those found on construction sites.

Utility Worker Safety – there have been a few accidents in past years of Operating Engineers working around above ground and underground utilities. This class is for members who have never or have rarely worked with utilities on a job site so they have the understanding needed to dig and/or work around underground utilities to protect the community and themselves and coworkers.  Through discussion and practical activities, class participants should obtain a greater understanding of the real threat of utility work in the community.  This class is for new and current members.

Pipeline Worker Safety – the goal of this course is to provide the knowledge to safely work around pipelines, the dangers associated with that as far as watching out for leaks, recognition of problem situations, what to do, who to call, and how to prevent possible dangers to the member and his co-workers.

Advance Crane Safety – for the experienced crane operator, to reinforce safety standards, various crane set-up procedures and different operating techniques to result in fewer accidents.

Brokk Excavator Safety – the goal of this course is to provide the knowledge to safety operate the Brokk and will be a combination of class room and field exercise which will cover the proper and safe use of the machine, any attachments and how to safely use them. Also to be covered is the generator that runs the robotic machine, how to safely start and stop the engine, how to check and maintain the motor and how to regulate the voltage in a safe manner. This class will be a “hands-on” class as the Robotic Excavator is operated remotely.
